Islas del Rosario

The Islas del Rosario are located about 35 km (22 miles) southwest of Cartagena, and the most common way to reach them is by boat. If you’re staying in Cartagena and plan on a day trip, most boat tours include transportation back to Cartagena the same evening.

Here is how:

  • Boat Tours from Cartagena
Many companies in Cartagena offer full-day tours to the Islas del Rosario, which usually include transportation, snorkeling equipment, lunch, and time to relax on the beach. These tours depart in the morning from the Muelle de la Bodeguita near the Old City.

  • Private Boat Rental
f you prefer a more personalized experience, you can rent a private boat. Prices can vary depending on the size and type of the boat, but this option offers more flexibility.

  • Ferries
There are also ferries that connect Cartagena with specific islands in the Rosario Archipelago. Ferries tend to be more affordable than private rentals, though less flexible.

Things to do at these beautiful islands:

  • Snorkeling and Diving
The Rosario Islands are part of a protected marine park, making them ideal for exploring underwater life. The coral reefs are home to a wide variety of fish and other marine species. Many tour operators and hotels provide snorkeling equipment or arrange guided dives for certified divers.

  • Beaches
The islands have some beautiful beaches with white sand and crystal-clear waters. Popular spots like Playa Blanca on Isla Barú (technically not part of the Rosario Islands but nearby) are well-frequented, while some smaller islands offer a more secluded beach experience.
I really loved playa La Cocotera, a charming, small white-sand beach perfect for a refreshing swim and relaxation. Here, you can unwind with a drink from one of the cozy beachfront bars, soaking in the serene ambiance and beautiful surroundings.

  • Kayaking and Paddleboarding
Many islands offer rentals for kayaking and paddleboarding, allowing you to explore the mangroves and lagoons around the islands. These calm waters make for an enjoyable and peaceful experience.

  • Relax at a Resort
Some of the islands have small eco-resorts and boutique hotels where you can enjoy a more relaxed and luxurious experience. If you want to extend your stay, these hotels often offer bungalows or rooms right on the beach.

  • Most accommodations in the Islas del Rosario are eco-lodges or small boutique hotels. I stayed in El Secreto and loved it a lot! The hostel offers a variety of activities, including snorkeling along the vibrant reef and a sunset kayaking tour around the island—both highly recommended experiences. When weather conditions are good, you can even enjoy a magical midnight swim among glowing plankton.

Travel Tips

  • Bring Cash
Some of the smaller islands do not have ATMs, and many places only accept cash.

  • Sun Protection
Bring plenty of sunscreen, a hat, and a rash guard if you’re planning on snorkeling or spending time in the water, as the sun can be very strong.

  • Timing
The best time to visit is during the dry season (December to April), when there is less rain and calmer waters.

  • Park Fee
Since the Islas del Rosario are part of a national park, there’s usually a small fee for entry, which is sometimes included in the cost of tours.

The Islas del Rosario are a true paradise for those looking to relax, explore nature, and experience the beauty of Colombia’s Caribbean coast!

  • Fun fact:
In the 1980s, during the height of his drug empire, Pablo Escobar constructed numerous mansions across Colombia as lavish venues for parties and retreats. One of these estates sits on Isla Grande, on the island’s western side, just a 20-minute walk from El Secreto.

Today, Escobar’s once-grand mansion lies in ruins, a haunting reminder of a notorious past. It has since become a shelter for local residents, who often guide curious visitors through the property. To explore the site, you can offer the locals a small fee, generally no more than 10,000 COP. This gesture grants you access to wander through the mansion and experience its eerie, abandoned halls.
