Volcan de Fuego

This is a must see and do  in Guatemala, one of the coolest things I’ve done in my life so far!

I can highly recommend booking a tour with Wicho’s and Charlie’s, located in Antigua. Make sure you contact them in advance so they will save you a spot, the number of hikers is limited.

W&C’s have a safe where you can keep your luggage during the hike. They also provide the right gear and clothing. In Antigua it gets super hot, on top of the volcano it gets super, super cold. You will need a sweater, gloves and a scarf! If you get easily blisters on your feet, I would not recommend renting hiking shoes. I did the hike on my sneakers without any problems.

Tip: Rent the hiking sticks! Thank me later.

So, how does the 2 day tour looks like?

  • Leaving Antigua early in the morning, it is only a 40 minute drive to get to Acatenango. From here you will start hiking to the basecamp. During the 5 to 7 hour hike, you will pass 3 different kinds of ecosystems, which is very fascinating.

  • Once at basecamp, you can drop your bag, relax a little bit, enjoy the view at Volcan Fuego and choose a bed in one of the tents. Later you will walk up for another hour to see the sunset. It is unbelievable.

  • Once the sun is set, you walk back to BC to get dinner and enjoy the eruptions of the Volcano. When you hear some thunder during the night, it’s the volcano!
Make sure you set your alarm for the sunrise the next day. You don’t want to miss this!

  • After the sunrise you’ll have breakfast and walk back to Acatenango where the bus will pick you up and drop you back off in Antigua.

  • Fun Fact: Guatemala has 37 named volcanoes, and 3 of those are still active, one of them is this one.
