Paracas

Paracas is a small fishing village and Peru’s most wild-life watching location. Paracas National Reserve and the Ballestas Islands are the main places to visit around.

Paracas, the city itself is not the prettiest, but it is charming. The centre only has a few streets with a beachwalk promenade with bars and restaurants, perfect place to catch the sunset.

Paracas is located 4 hours south from Lima and one hour north from Huacachina by bus.

Paracas National Reserve

Paracas National Reserve is known for its wildlife. The park houses over 400 species of flora and fauna, including the Humboldt penguin, the Peruvian Boody, sea lions, humpback whales, dolphins,  all kinds of seabirds and flamingos. The best way to visit the park is definitely by bike.

The bicycle route in the park takes you through the desert and out of nowhere, you’ll be facing the ocean. It is possible to do a 20km or a 30km tour. Just follow the large direction signs, they will tell you how far each vista point is.

But first things first. Rent a bike (one day in advance) in Paracas and make sure to do a small test ride with your bike before you leave to the National Park.

It is a 15 to 20 minute bike ride from Paracas to the National Reserve. Follow the small route next to the water, you will have a look into some of the prettiest and luxurious houses and hotels in Peru!

What to bring: Money, a lot of water, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, light jacket, camera

Entrance fee needs to be paid at the entrance of the park. No more than 5 euro.

Did you know they call the park “Peru’s Galapagos” or “The cheap Galapagos” because of the variety of wildlife.
