Quito

Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, is a vibrant destination filled with rich history, beautiful architecture, and a lively culture. Nestled high in the Andes at an elevation of 2,850 meters (9,350 feet), it’s the second-highest capital city in the world. Known for its well-preserved colonial center, Quito is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a hub for exploring the natural and cultural treasures of Ecuador.

Some stuff to know:

  • When you travel to Ecuador by airplane, you will probably enter the country in Quito.
Visas are on arrival for most countries. Check out here

  • Getting to the city center will take about 40 minutes by private taxi, don’t pay more than 25 USD.

  • The city is the closest capital to the equator (25km) and located at an elevation of 2850 meters. When you’re not used to heights, Quito is a good place to acclimatize for a couple of days. The country has many volcanoes which go up to 6000 meters. Try to avoid alcohol!

  • The historic center of Quito is one of the largest and best-preserved in the Americas. The center is full of colonial buildings, beautiful squares and Plazas.

What is there to see?

  • Palacio de Gobierno (The Government Palace)

  • La Iglesia de la Compañía (The Church of the Society of Jesus)

  • Catedral Metropolitana de Quito (Metropolitan Cathedral of Quito)

  • Basílica del Voto Nacional (Basilica of the National Vow) also known as the Notre Dame

  • Santo Domingo Church

  • Calle La Ronda (La Ronda Street) to go out at night

I would recommend doing a free walking tour through your hotel or hostel. This is the best way to get to know the city. Don’t forget to tip the guide after the tour!

I only spend one day in Quito because I chose to go into the nature in as soon as possible!

Where to stay? Are you a (solo) backpacker and do you want to meet a lot of people? Book a stay at the Secret Garden Quito. The hostel is located next to the old town and has an amazing vibe. It’s easy to meet people at the upper deck, a huge terrace with an amazing view over the city. Don’t forget to sign up for dinner at the kitchen!

Quito is perfectly located to do a lot of day trips. Popular ones are Cotopaxi, Quilotoa, Mindo or Otavalo, all 50 USD.j
