Lima

Lima is the capital of Peru and lies at the Pacific coast. It is one of the biggest cities of South America with a population of 9 million in the metropolitan area.

Most tourists arrive in Lima and leave after one day or two. If you only have 10 to 14 days in Peru I would recommend doing so. If you fly back home from Lima you can always plan your last day in the capital. The airport is one hour away from Miraflores, a popular area in the city for tourists.

Traveling times from Lima to … by bus

  • North: Huaraz 8 hours

  • East: Cusco 23 hours (plane 1,5h)

  • South: Paracas 4 hours, Huacachina 5 hours and Arequipa 18 hours

What to do

Plaza Mayor

Until 1990, Plaza Mayor de Lima was known as Plaza de Armas. The square is surrounded by the Government Palace, the Cathedral of Lima and the Municipal Palace. The Cathedral of Lima is the first church built in Lima, in 1535.

The square itself is the oldest public place in Lima. They built all those important buildings here so it would remain the (most important) center of the city.

Miraflores

Miraflores is the most popular and trendy area in Lima. The newer streets, buildings and parks make it a pleasant area to stay and discover the city.

This area is located right next to the beach, a popular place for surfing and kite surfing. The beach promenade, called Malecon, is the perfect place to watch the sunset and is about 8 kilometers long.

Lima is the only capital in South America boarding the ocean, make advantage of that. Discover the many shops, restaurants and bars!

Parque Kennedy

Another attraction in Miraflores is Parque Kennedy. The park is located in the center of the shopping and restaurant district of Miraflores. It is well known for its population of stray cats, more than 100. They have been living there now more than 20 years and get food from a non-profit organization.

Where to stay

Alpes Lima Kennedy Park is a hosel/hotel with great dorm rooms, private rooms and an amazing outdoor chilling area! Right in the center of Miraflores! Highly recommended.
