Galle

Galle, located on the southwestern tip of Sri Lanka, is a vibrant city renowned for its rich history, stunning beaches, and cultural history. The centerpiece of Galle is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Galle Fort, an architectural marvel originally built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later fortified by the Dutch. This well-preserved fort area offers a blend of European and South Asian influences, with narrow cobblestone streets, colonial-era buildings, museums, art galleries, and charming boutiques.

The fort in Galle is a perfect day trip from Mirissa, just an hour away. If you're coming from Colombo, it's a two-hour drive via the highway.

I visited Galle on my way to the airport on the last day of our travels, coming from Mirissa. You should stay at least half a day in Galle to enjoy the shops and many restaurants. I can highly recommend 1710 Restaurant.

Most people stay for one night to explore the fort and enjoy the beautiful nearby beaches. I highly recommend making a stop here! It's a great way to experience the history and charm of this coastal city.
