Weligama
Weligama, located next to Mirissa, is a large bay town known for its sandy beaches and ideal surfing conditions. The bay is one the few places around that has large hotels like a Marriott, proving its growing popularity among tourists.
The waves suit both beginners and experienced surfers, with the bay stretching over 2 km. Along the beach, you'll find surf schools, fishermen, and fishing boats. The long beach is also popular with runners in the morning and afternoon.
The town has charming beachfront cafes, fresh seafood, and a laid-back vibe. Nearby fishing villages and markets offer a taste of local culture. Easy to reach from Galle (1 hour) and Mirissa (15 min), Weligama blends adventure with relaxation.
On the western side of the bay, there's a small island just a few meters from the shore. This is Taprobane Island, the only privately owned island in Sri Lanka. It has a small hotel. (Last photo)
In my opinion, Weligama Bay isn't the coziest place to relax, but there's definitely a lot to do!
Weligama Fisherman's Village Beach
Weligama Fisherman's Village Beach is a small beach between Weligama Bay and Jungle Beach. During the day, fishers come ashore here after fishing. The colorful boats create a beautiful scene both on the beach and in the water with the bay in the background.
Jungle Beach
Located next to Weligama Bay, - almost 20 min walk - this tiny beach is a fun place to have a swim and a drink at the small beach bar. It is located in between to a lot of luxery hotels and a small concrete road. As Weligama Bay might be windy, Jungle Beach is more closed in and less windy.
I can definitely recommend relaxing at this little beach!
