La Paz
La Paz is the country’s administrative capital, located in a deep valley surrounded by the Andes mountains at an elevation of around 3,650 meters (11,975 feet), making it one of the highest cities in the world.
Ride the Teleférico for stunning cityscapes, or explore the quirky Witches’ Market for local traditions. If you like shopping and wandering around, the area around Plaza Mayor de San Francisco is the place to be. Thrill-seekers can cycle the daring Death Road, while nature lovers can hike through the surreal Valle de la Luna or climb Mount Illimani. With colorful markets, historic sites, and a lively nightlife, La Paz is perfect for adventure and cultural exploration.
Note:
I did not visit any of the attractions, only the full Teleférico tour around the city, very impressive and cheaper than 5 euro.
This is because when I was in La Paz, there were many protests and strikes. Many streets and areas were blocked and not safe. Most buses come to the Terminal de Buses La Paz, which is in a good part of the city. There are many nice hotels nearby. I can recommend The Rooftop Hostel
I used La Paz mostly to travel to other places like Copacabana (3/4 hours by minibus), Rurrenabaque (12 hours by bus), and Sucre (12 hours by bus).
Buses to Copacabana and Rurrenabaque do not leave from the main bus terminal. They depart from other locations in the city. Be sure to ask your hotel where to find them.
Traveling from Santa Cruz? There are many flights from Santa Cruz to La Paz, and they take about 1.5 hours.
The Teleférico is a remarkable cable car system, connecting different parts of the city, making travel easy while offering breathtaking views of the Andes and La Paz's unique landscape. Stretching across various lines, it’s both a practical transportation method and a tourist attraction. Visitors enjoy a bird's-eye view of the city's vibrant neighborhoods, mountains, and dramatic valleys during their ride.
Be sure to purchase the correct ticket to access all the lines of the Teleférico.
